Charity Auction “Blooming towards the sky”

Sebastian Masuda is once again participating in the charity auction held at the POLA Museum Annex in Ginza. This year’s exhibition, “Blooming towards the sky,” features works by 24 artists and aims to support the recovery efforts for the Noto Peninsula Earthquake. Based on the theme of “new buds and sprouting,” Masuda presents a new collaborative work, “Inside &: Bloom,” created together with two New York–based artists: photographer Shoji Van Kuzumi and dance artist Mamiko Nakatsugawa. The artwork will be on view at the venue and available for bidding online through a silent auction system until November 30.

The POLA Museum Annex charity auction was launched during the pandemic in 2020 as an
immediate response to support healthcare professionals on the front lines of the crisis. The 6th iteration of the charity auction this year will provide ongoing support for much-needed reconstruction work on the Noto Peninsula, which is still in progress more than a year after the devastating earthquake. Titled Blooming Towards the Sky, the exhibition features works from 24 artists who share our vision, inspired by the theme of new growth sprouting forth. These works will be on show at the exhibition and available for purchase by means of an online silent auction. Drawings will also be offered for sale by lottery. The participating artists have produced a variety of wonderful interpretations of new growth sprouting that bring hope to our hearts and the promise of a brighter future. All proceeds from the auction and sale of drawings will be donated to the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund through the Japanese Red Cross Society.
* A silent auction is an auction where all bids are submitted privately without knowledge of competing bids. The highest bidder at the end of the auction period wins the auction.

This work begins with interviews that the author conducted with people he encountered locally in his third year of living in New York.
What is a miracle for you? If you made a juice from your miracle, what flavor would it have? If you were told that you could freely paint the sky, what color would you choose to make it? What is something that you treasured during your childhood? When did you lose possession of it? Say something to yourself in the mirror.
Words transcend external markers like gender or nationality, revealing the contours of the individual sprouting within. After the dialogues, the author took a portrait photograph of the interviewee. He then interpreted their responses as a translator and applied representative 3D decorations of them over the photograph. This was an attempt to reconstruct spoken words in a visual and tactile way; a ritualistic method of visualizing another person’s inner world through one’s hands. A way to feel the breath of identity that glimmers between photograph and memory, and between words and ornamentation.
* “Inside and” is a series of portraits that engage in dialogue through the works. This work was created in collaboration with two New York-based artists: photographer Shoji Van Kuzumi and dance artist Mamiko Nakatsugawa.

公開期間：11月10日（月）11:00～11月30日（日）23:59まで本チャリティオークションは、2020 年のコロナ渦中、医療従事者の方々に対して私たちが「今できること」をと考え、スタートしました。地震から1年以上が経過した今も能登の復興には多くの課題が残されており、継続的な支援の必要性を感じています。私たちは、この困難な状況から再生し、未来へと向かう能登の姿を今年のテーマ「新芽、芽吹く」に込め、「Blooming towards the sky」展と題し、企画展を開催することとしました。
本展では、賛同いただいた24名のアーティストが各1点、テーマをもとにオリジナル作品を制作します。作品は、展示会場でご覧いただけるとともに、サイレントオークション形式※でオンラインにてご入札いただけます。オークション作品およびドローイングの販売収益全額は、日本赤十字社を通じ「令和６年能登半島地震災害義援金」へ寄付予定です。

本作は、ニューヨークに移住して三年目の作者が、現地で出会った人々に行ったインタビューから始まる。
あなたにとって奇跡とは何ですか？ それをジュースにしたらどんな味がしますか？ 空を自由に塗っていいと言われたら、何色に塗りますか？ 小さい頃の宝物を教えてください。それはいつ手元からなくなりましたか？ 鏡の中の自分にひとこと、どうぞ。
言葉は、ジェンダーや国籍といった外的な記号を越え、 内面に芽吹く個の輪郭を浮かび上がらせる。対話ののち、被写体のポートレートを撮影し、 作者はその応答を翻訳者として受け取り、写真の上に立体的な装飾を施す。
それは、語られた言葉を視覚的・触覚的に再構築する試みであり、 他者の心象を自身の手を通して可視化する儀式でもある。
写真と記憶、言葉と装飾のあいだに煌めく、 アイデンティティの息吹を見守る。
